With bakeries popping up in every postcode it’s clear that the demand for real bread is growing in the city. Having said that, the supermarkets still dominate the market and, according to the National Association of British and Irish Flour Millers, the majority of the bread we consume (80%) is the wrapped and sliced version produced by large bakeries. In fact, high street bakeries only account for around 3% of the bread we buy.

Real Bread Week, which takes place this week, promotes local, independent real bread bakeries. The campaign believes that everyone should have the chance to choose real bread and that real bread is better for our health, our communities and the planet as a whole. So, we thought we’d join in and take our regular Meet the Producer blog down to The Depot Bakery in Kelham Island where all our bread and pastries are baked.

Having moved from Arundel Street to Burton Road just under two years ago, The Depot Bakery is a commercial bakery supplying shops and cafes across the city but also has an on-site eatery. Founded by the couple behind Tamper Coffee (Jonathan and Natalie Perry) and Ben Smith (who also runs the Peddler night market), they are bakers of artisan breads, pastries and patisserie.

Here at Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium, we have been stocking bread from Depot for around a year and we regularly have a wide range of loaves a including sourdough, a NY deli rye and a white bloomer. Everything is baked fresh and delivered each morning (including Sundays and most bank holidays) along with the bakery’s delicious croissants, scones and brioche buns.

Staff favourites include the mini ciabattas. They’re perfect for sandwiches or for serving as flatbreads with dips, but we also like to use them as a cheat’s pizza base. Just slice in half, top with your favourite ingredients and grill for a quick and easy tea. The cheese scones also get the thumbs up as they are incredibly savoury and great for snacking. Try warming them up and serving with butter for an extra special treat. Brioche buns are very popular with our customers, especially as we approach barbecue season. They work incredibly well with our Mr Pickles’ quarter pounders.

    Your croissants are the best in Sheffield. I LOVE croissants, and would buy one whenever the opportunity arises – but I’ve not found one to rival yours. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had many croissants in France that are better.
    The bread is amazing too, and the brioche buns with Mr Pickles burgers are a dream … but those croissants… honestly…
